Tuesday 5 February 2019: 7.45pm KO
As more and more Premier League teams fall by the wayside, Wolverhampton Wanderers are looking to be a decent outside bet to win the FA Cup. That dream nearly ended when they trailed Shrewsbury Town 2-0 before a late comeback broke the home side’s hearts. Now Wolves bid to finish the job off to secure an away fifth round tie against Bristol City.
There are only seven Premier League teams left in this season’s FA Cup. One more will fall before we reach the last eight as Chelsea take on Manchester United in the fifth round. Seventh-placed Wolverhampton Wanderers are looking a good bet to win the cup, especially if something was to happen to Manchester City. You can get odds of 10/1 (11.0) at William Hill on their first FA Cup victory since 1960.
Those odds would have been a lot higher when Wolves – who beat Liverpool in the third round- were 2-0 down at League One relegation candidates Shrewsbury Town.
Two second-half goals had given Shrewsbury the lead and it was still 2-0 with only 17 minutes remaining. Then a goal from Manuel Jimenez got Wolves back in the tie and in injury time, Matt Doherty got the equalizer to keep them in the tie. Doherty is 5/1 (6.0) at Unibet to score in this match.
Shrewsbury Town are in relegation trouble in League One. A 3-0 home loss to league leaders Luton Town on Saturday, left them one from bottom but only a point from safety.
They’ll put their league worries to one side for this game as they bid to reach the last sixteen of the FA Cup. Form isn’t great though with only one win in their last 11 league and cup games. That was the surprise 3-2 win at Championship side Stoke City in the FA Cup third round. You can get odds of 18/1 (19.0) at Betfair on them getting the victory here.
Wolverhampton Wanderers will make some changes for this game as is the case with this tournament. Logic would be there won’t be extensive changes though.
Head to Head
The last two games between these sides have ended all-square. It’s 11/2 (6.5) at Bet365 that this game ends in a draw. All three previous FA Cup ties between Wolverhampton Wanderers and Shrewsbury Town have seen both teams score. There are odds of 7/5 (2.4) at Coral on that happening on Tuesday.
Over 2.5 Goals Likely
The first few months of the season saw a string of games with under 2.5 goals scored in them. That’s all changed though and there have been over 2.5 goals scored in their last six matches. It’s 3/5 (1.6) at BetVictor on over 2.5 goals being scored in this game.
Jimenez on Fire
Raul Jimenez is one key reason why Wolverhampton Wanderers are in such great form at present. He’s scored in each of the last three games with four goals scored. Jimenez is 16.5 (4.2) at Paddy Power to score the first goal in this match and 5/6 (1.83) at SkyBet to get on the scoresheet at any time in the match.
An Away Goal?
Shrewsbury Town may be struggling for form but they always seem to score an away goal. Ten of their last 11 away games in all competitions has seen them score. If they can get on the score sheet at Molineux, it’s 6/5 (2.2) at SportingBet.
All the Way?
This cup tie has to be decided on Tuesday. Will we see a penalty shoot-out? The odds on either team getting through in that manner are 14/1 (15.0) at SkyBet.
Wolverhampton Wanderers got themselves out of a very large hole in the first game. With home advantage, they have to be strong favourites to reach the last sixteen. A bet on Wolves winning with over 2.5 goals in the match is 3/4 (1.75) at Betway.
