Wigan Athletic are in relegation trouble and have only one win from their last 11 games in the Championship They face a tough battle to get more points on the table as they host league leaders Norwich City. The visitors need to get back in winning ways after being held to a 2-2 home draw by Reading on Wednesday evening.
It could be a case of ‘here we go again’ for Wigan Athletic. The last four seasons has seen them become the ultimate yo-yo team. They finish 23rd in the Championship and get relegated, then the following season win League One. Then they again finish 23rd before winning the League One title again. It’s all a bit deja vu at the moment as Wigan find themselves one place and two points above the relegation zone. Wigan are currently 8/1 (9.0) at Bet365 to be relegated (again).
The only league win they have had in their last 11 league games was when beating Bolton Wanderers (currently 23rd in the table). Midweek saw them lose 2-1 at Hull City after taking an early lead. A goal five minutes from time saw them returning home with no points.
It’s their away form that has caused them plenty of problems this season. They have only earned seven points all season, the worst in the division. Five of their last seven league games have been played away hence their slide down the table.
At home It’s a different story on home territory though with nine wins this season and only four defeats. Three of their four defeats have been against sides currently in the top eight. They are 3/1 (4.0) at Paddy Power to beat Norwich City on Sunday.
Three of those four losses came in the space of 24 days at the end of last year and New Year’s Day. They come into this game unbeaten in their last seven home league matches. Three have been won but four of the last five have ended all-square. The odds on them drawing with Norwich City are 29/10 (3.9) at Betfair.
Norwich City top the table but their long run of consecutive wins came to an end on Wednesday in an eventful home game against Reading. They had won eight in a row but trailed Reading 1-0 with four minutes to go. Then they scored two goals to seemingly win the match only for their opponents to equalize in the 97th minute. They are still 1/7 (1.14) at SkyBet to win the title this season.
Despite the draw, they lead the table by six points and are seven clear of third-placed Sheffield United with only five games to go. They are unbeaten in their last nine league games with only one loss in the last 16. Away form has been strong with four straight wins scoring ten goals. There are odds of 4/5 (1.8) at Ladbrokes on them winning at Wigan on Sunday.
Norwich City are unbeaten in their last three games against Wigan Athletic with two wins and a draw. In 14 previous meetings, Wigan have only won on three occasions. Each of those wins were by a 1-0 score line and it’s 15/1 (16.0) at BetVictor on them winning this match with the only goal of the game.
Garner to Score?
Wigan have only scored in two of their last five home league games. Joe Garner scored in both of those games and at Betway he’s 11/5 (3.2) to score in this match.
Another 0-0 Perhaps?
Three of the last five Wigan home league games have ended in a goalless draw. You can get odds of 13/1 (14.0) at Unibet on that being the final score on Sunday.
Wigan Athletic are in danger of a third relegation from the Championship in recent years. They have good home form but not a good record when playing teams in the top eight. Norwich City are looking good to win promotion and a bet on them winning this game with over 1.5 goals in the game is 23/20 (2.15) at Coral.
