Football is a game of incredible moments. These moments make us develop a lifelong affection for the beautiful game. But perhaps the most earth-shattering moment of them all is when a defender scores an absolute screamer. Here is our selection of the ten best goals ever scored by defenders.
10. Maicon v Juventus.
Name a more iconic duo than Brazilian fullbacks and great goals. Playing for Inter against Juventus, Maicon toyed with the opposition by juggling the ball with all available body parts and then slamming the ball into the goal with remarkable ease.
9. Lahm v Costa Rica.
Widely considered as one of the best fullbacks of all time, Phillip Lahm didn’t score many goals. However, he proved that he was capable of the sublime with a wonderful goal against Costa Rica. Cutting in from the left and getting the ball on to his favoured right foot, Lahm curled an unstoppable effort past the Costa Rican goalkeeper.
8. Ronald Koeman v Porto.
Giving his goalscoring exploits, you wouldn’t think Ronald Koeman was a defender. He scored few better than this one against Porto. Bringing the ball out of defence, he proceeded to rifle the ball into the top corner. Efforts like this helped cement the Dutchman’s reputation as an extraordinary goalscoring defender.
7. Philippe Mexes v Inter.
For a somewhat average defender, Phillip Mexes scored some stupendous goals. Another acrobatic effort, the AC Milan defender produced stunning volley from outside the area against non-other than fierce rivals Inter.
6. Giovanni van Bronckhorst v Uruguay.
Another World Cup. Another unbelievable goal. The Dutch veteran needed a patent for laser precision technology after this audacious effort. When the ball left his foot, there was no question about what would happen.
5. Benjamin Pavard v Argentina.
Voted goal of the tournament at the 2018 World Cup, the technique displayed by Pavard with this effort versus Argentina is breathtaking. A slightly overhit cross was smashed home by Pavard and in doing he scored one of the great World Cup goals.
4. Carlos Alberto v Italy.
Widely regarded as the best team goal ever scored, this fantastic effort wouldn’t like out of place displayed in national art galleries alongside Mozart and Van Gogh. A perfect expression of tenacity and Brazilian samba, this goal displays the beauty of the Brazilian style at its tantalising best.
3. Roberto Carlos v Tenerife.
The Brazilian maestro has become synonymous with scoring remarkable goals. Goals like this one against Tenerife cement his legacy. From a seemingly impossible angle, the Real Madrid left-back somehow managed to generate an effort with enough power and precision that the keeper could do nothing about it.
2. Philippe Mexes v Anderlecht.
The Anderlecht players could’ve been forgiven for thinking that there was a limited amount of danger when an innocuous free-kick was floated towards the back post. Phillippe Mexes had other ideas. Taking the ball down on his chest with a technique akin to prime Van Basten, the Frenchman scored one of the most audacious goals in football history. A sublime bicycle kick left the Anderlecht keeping rooted to the spot.
Roberto Carlos v France
A goal that simply defied the laws of physics. When developing new surface to air missiles, scientists watch Roberto Carlos smash a wondrous 35-yard freekick past the helpless Fabian Barthez to develop a better understanding of aerodynamics. At first, the ball appeared as if it was heading yards past the intended target. However, the ball suddenly curled back in from obscurity and almost broke the back of the net as it went in.
