Betting for the 2020 Oscars is already underway and according to bookmakers, one movie is leading the way for English cinema.

Elton John biopic Rocketman is set to be released in May and has already earned a spot among the leading contenders in the betting for Best Picture at next February’s Academy Awards, with bookmaker Paddy Power rating it as a 11/1 shot.

The movie has a long history, going back to an announcement in 2012 that Elton John had worked on developing a biopic, and the names of actors to have been linked with the project have included Justin Timberlake and Tom Hardy. But ultimately, it was Taron Egerton, whose most famous work was in the Kingsman movies, who landed the role. The movie will also be directed by Dexter Fletcher, who was also involved in Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody.

Egerton has described the movie as more of a ‘fantasy musical’ than a biopic and has apparently sung all the songs himself, but it essentially tells the story of Elton John’s colourful career, including his struggles with depression and addiction, and his acceptance of his sexuality.

If Rocketman scoops the Best Picture prize next year, it will be the first biopic to land the top award since A Beautiful Mind in 2001, but there is plenty of competition in what seems like a crowded field in 2019. The current favourite is The Irishman (3/1) directed by Martin Scorcese and starring Al Pacino and Robert De Niro, while Quentin Tarantino’s star-studded Once Upon A Time In Hollywood (6/1) and political thrillers The Laundromat (4/1) and The Last Thing He Wanted (6/1) have also been attracting plenty of support. There are also lively contenders in the form of the Tom Hanks project A Beautiful Day In The Neighborhood (9/1) and wartime drama Jojo Rabbit (9/1).
