A return to the Championship is the target for both of these clubs. Charlton Athletic finished third in the table after a strong end to the season but had to rely on penalties to get past Doncaster Rovers in the semi-finals. They take on Sunderand who are looking for promotion after two successive relegations.
It’s not been easy being a Sunderland fan for ages. Constant relegation battles in the Premier League were won before they finally went down. Even worse was to follow as they went straight down to League One but now they have the chance to return to the Championship at the first attempt. They are 10/11 (1.91) at William Hill to win promotion this season.
Sunderland finished fifth in the main season and were six points adrift of the automatic promotion places. They had their chances to finish in the top two but could only win one of their last seven league games. It’s 15/8 (2.87) at Betfred that they can beat Charlton Athletic in 90 minutes.
A big problem Sunderland have had this season is the number of games they have drawn. 19 ended that way in League One this season and with that kind of record taking the 9/4 (3.25) on offer at William Hill for a draw may well be worth taking.
This is their second trip to Wembley this season. Previously they lost on penalties to Portsmouth in the EFL Cup (another game that ended level after 90 minutes). Sunderland got revenge on Pompey by beating them in the play-off semi-final and now take on Charlton hoping this will be their last game in League One.
Charlton Athletic were the form side in the final weeks of the League One season. A form guide for the final 15 games played has them five points clear of the rest. You can get odds of 5/6 (1.83) at Betfred on them being promoted this season.
The Londoners had only lost one of their last 16 games before the second leg of their semi-final against Doncaster Rovers. Charlton had won the away leg 2-1 but lost 3-2 at home before winning on penalties. That ended a run of four wins in a row and William Hill will give you 13/8 (2.61) on them getting back into winning ways with a victory in 90 minutes at Wembley.
Charlton Athletic have only lost one of their last eight games against Sunderland. That loss happened this season when losing 2-1 at the Stadium of Light in August. The return fixture ended in a 1-1 draw Six of the last last nine games played between them have had over 2.5 goals scored in them. The odds on that stat coming up in this game are 11/10 (2.1) at Betfred.
Aiden McGeady missed the semi-finals but Sunderland are hopeful he will be fit for this match.
Top Scoring Taylor
Lyle Taylor is Charlton’s top goal scorer and has six goals in his last seven games. He scored for Charlton in their August meeting with Sunderland, can he be on target at Wembley too? William Hill have odds of 13/10 (2.3) on him scoring in this match.
Another 1-1 Draw
Sunderland had 19 league draws this season and all but four of them ended 1-1. If you think that’s going to be the score after 90 minutes in this game, making your wager at Betfred will see you receive odds of 5/1 (6.0).
Charlton’s good run hit a minor setback when losing the second leg of their play-off semi-final. They fought back to win on penalties. There’s not too much between these two teams and a close match looks likely. It could well go all the way and William Hill will give you 12/1 (13.0) on either of these two sides winning this match on penalties.
