Despite a run of nine league games without defeat, Sunderland still have work to do if they want to win automatic promotion. They were held to a 1-1 home draw by Blackpool on Tuesday night. That left them in fourth place, four points behind the automatic promotion places and with only one game in hand.
That draw with Blackpool was their fourth draw in their last five league games. Now they face two home games in four days against sides in the bottom half of the table. They are still unbeaten at home in League One this season but have only won one of their last four home games. You can get odds of 4/6 (1.66) at Betway to beat Accrington.
Sunderland need to get back into winning ways or the only way they are going to get back into the Championship is via the play-offs. They can be backed at 11/10 (2.1) to win promotion this season.
Accrington Stanley are 16th in League One and only three points above the relegation zone. They do have two games in hand though but that won’t mean much if they don’t improve their current form. They have failed to win any of their last six league games.
It’s easy to see why they are having problems, you see they just can’t score goals at present. No goals in the last six league games is a massive worry for Stanley. There are odds of 6/5 (2.2) at Betfair on Sunderland keeping a clean sheet in this game.
Accrington last won on Boxing Day and that followed a win on the 22nd. That was a week to remember as those are only the two league wins they have had since the end of October. It’s 9/2 (5.5) at Unibet on them getting a win at Sunderland.
Only one of their last nine away league games have been won with no goals scored in the last four. There are odds of 8/15 (1.52) on them scoring in this match but 5/4 (2.25) with the same company on them not getting on the score sheet.
The two teams have only had eight completed matches in the past. Sunderland have won the last six and only lost to Accrington once. The form isn’t too reliable though seeing all their meetings were in the 19th century with the last game played in 1894. They did meet at Accrington in December 2018 but the game was abandoned in the second-half due to a waterlogged pitch with the score 1-1.
Accrington may give new signing Luke Armstrong more time in this game after coming on as a sub at the weekend.
Sunderland haven’t just drawn four of their last five league games but all of them have ended 1-1. That makes an astonishing eleven 1-1 league draws for Sunderland this season plus another one in the FA Cup. The odds on that score line in this game are 6/1 (7.0) at Betfair.
Low Scoring Affair
The last nine Sunderland league games have had under 2.5 goals scored in them. That same statistic applies to the last five Accrington Stanley matches. The odds of under 2.5 goals being scored in this game are 4/5 (1.8) at William Hill.
All these draws isn’t helping Sunderland in their bid to make an immediate return to the Championship. Successive home games against Accrington Stanley and Gillingham have to produce six points if they want to make ground up on the top two. This game is an ideal opportunity to get back into winning ways with the away side in poor form and without a goal all year. A bet on Sunderland winning to nil is 7/4 (2.75) at BetVictor.
