Marc Gasol is a consistent contributor and has been for the 11 seasons that he has been in the league. He averages 15.4 points, 8.7 rebounds, 4.7 assists, 1.2 steals and 1.2 blocks in 33.7 minutes per game. Coming from a 33-year-old (He turns 34 on Tuesday), these stats are very impressive.
It has been reported that Sacramento is interested in him. The veteran Center is, on paper, a good fit for the Kings, who have a lot of expiring contracts on their hands. The Kings even have longtime former Grizzly Zach Randolph on the roster, someone who Memphis fans might be happy to see return.
Another interesting connection between Gasol and the Kings is related to coaching. Sacramento’s head coach, Dave Joerger, was the head coach of the Grizzlies from 2013-2016, after having been an assistant from 2007 until 2013.
A case could be made that Joerger is the best coach in the league for Gasol, as the Grizzlies improved in defensive efficiency every year of the three years that Joerger was the head assistant. Gasol, even at his older age, could improve defensively again in Sacramento. He could also make their teammates better, as an anchoring presence in the paint.
This news has an impact on sports betting in the fact that the Kings could quietly get a lot better with Gasol added, although he may be just a rental. Sacramento is 25-25 currently, but the addition of Gasol could make them a very interesting pick against some of the better teams in the west, who could be favored by substantial margins.
The odds for Sacramento would undoubtedly improve, but first things first – they should make the postseason. It will be interesting to see how Sacramento fares later in the season, should they land Gasol in the upcoming weeks.
