A football transfer window becomes more like Christmas every year.  There’s a whole month to sort out deals (aka buying presents) and it all seems to get left to the last minute. The next few days are going to be hectic and one player attracting interest is Southampton’s Charlie Austin.

Austin has proved himself to be a prolific goal scorer if he’s given the opportunity and retains fitness. He’s closing in on 250 career goals but hasn’t found a fan in Southampton’s new manager Ralph Hasenhüttl. He’s played 18 games and scored three goals this season, but often spends most of his time sitting on the bench.

Rise to Fame

The 29-year-old still has a lot to offer but probably not at Premier League level. Most of his career has been spent in the lower leagues and with great success.  He started his career in non-league football and attention was turned in his direction when scoring 64 goals in 57 games for Poole Town.

That led to him signing for Swindon Town and he handled the rise in class extremely well. 65 games for the club between 2009 and 2011 saw him attract the interest of Championship side Burnley.  Again, he adapted well and scored 45 goals in 90 games for the Clarets.  Three years later, he joined QPR, helping them get promotion to the Premier League.

A Hit in the Premier League

He hit 18 goals in 35 Premier League games despite his side being relegated. 2016 saw him return to the Premier League with Southampton. Injuries haven’t helped Austin but when he’s fit, this is a guy who remains very dangerous in the opposition’s penalty area.

Aston Villa are favourites to sign the striker who has a proven record in the Championship. Villa are on the fringes of the play-offs and his goals could take them back into the Premier League. Austin is 1/1 at SkyBet to join Villa.
