Manchester City are chasing four trophies this season with one in the bag already. They look well-placed to reach the last eight of the Champions League after a 3-2 away win in the first leg against Schalke 04.
Manchester City had a few problems in the first leg despite taking an early lead. They were 2-1 down at half-time after some controversial decisions but two late goals saw them return home with a 3-2 win.
City are chasing four trophies and are currently 5/2 (3.5) at BetVictor to win the Champions League for the first time. They are unbeaten in their last nine games winning eight of them in 90 minutes (the other being their penalty shoot-out win in the Carabao Cup).
They come into this game knowing that Schalke will have to score at least twice in this game. Anything less than that will see the Germans eliminated and just one City goal means Schalke will need three.
Their Champions League season began with a surprising home defeat by Lyon. Since then Pep Guardiola’s team have won both of their home games beating Shakhtar Donetsk 6-0 and Hoffenheim 2-1. They are 1/6 (1.16) at Bet365 to win this game so we need to look elsewhere for some more profitable odds. Manchester City have scored at least three goals in 12 of their last 16 home games and it’s 4/6 (1.66) at Coral on that happening against Schalke.
The German side are 14th in the Bundesliga and only four points above the relegation zone. They are still in the German Cup and that’s looking the only way they are going to be playing in European competitions next season.
Friday saw them lose 4-2 at Werder Bremen despite taking an early lead. Their defending certainly leaves a lot to desire at present with 14 goals conceded in their last four matches. Schalke have failed to win any of their last six games and their away form isn’t inspiring either.
Over 90 minutes they have just one win in their last 13 games on the road. Their only win was at Stuttgart who are in the bottom three of the Bundesliga. You can get odds of 16/1 (17.0) at Paddy Power on them getting a win at the Etihad on Tuesday evening.
In the Champions League they have only lost two of their last eight games. They have lost two of their seven played this season. The other loss was in the group stages at Porto, who are already through to the last eight.
The two teams have had four previous meetings and City have won the last three scoring ten goals. Schalke’s only victory over City was in the first leg of their European Cup Winners Cup tie 49 years ago.
There were no injury problems reported by Manchester City after their 3-1 home win over Watford on Saturday. Schalke will be without Allesandro Schopf for this game.
Over 2.5 Goals Looking Good
10 of the last 12 Schalke games have had over 2.5 goals scored in them (mainly by the opposition). For the same stat, each of Manchester City’s seven games in the Champions League this season have had at least three goals scored in them. There are odds of 4/11 (1.36) at BoyleSports on there being over 2.5 goals in this match.
Second Half Goal
Eight of the last nine Manchester City games have seen them score a goal in the second half. It’s 10/11 (1.91) at Ladbrokes that the second half of this game is the highest scoring half. That’s happened in each of the last three City games.
Manchester City should have no problems progressing in this tie. They continue to be in good goal scoring form despite the absence of Kevin du Bruyne in midfield. Schalke are in terrible form in the German Bundesliga and if City are in the mood, this could be another heavy defeat for the Germans. The odds on a City win and over 2.5 goals in the game are 4/9 (1.44) at Paddy Power.
