Sunday 26 May: 7.30pm KO
It’s the final day of the Serie A season and that often brings some rather meaningless games. The exact opposite applies to this game between Inter and Empoli. This match has massive influence on who will qualify for the Champions League next season and who will be relegated to Serie B this season. Get ready for some cheers and tears at the end of this game.
Inter start their final game of the season in fourth place in Serie A. That’s the final qualifying position for the Champions League and a win at home to Empoli will see them back in Europe’s top club competition. William Hill will give you odds of 4/11 (1.36) on them winning this match.
They are only behind third-placed Atalanta on head-to-head results with points level. They host Sassuolo on Sunday It’s Milan who Inter are worried about as they are only a point behind them. If Milan don’t win at SPAL, then that’s it, Inter are back in the Champions League.
A Milan victory will mean Inter have to beat Empoli unless Atalanta can’t beat Sassuolo. It’s going to be a tense afternoon, just like last season when Inter clinched Champions League football on the final day.
It’s not been an easy run-in for Inter with only one win in their last five games. Mind you, they have had to play the top two and fifth-placed AS Roma. Their only win was at home to relegated Chievo. That victory is also their only win in the last six league and cup games. Three of those games have ended in a draw and the odds on this game ending level is 19/5 (5.6) at Betfred.
Empoli come into this game with eyes on other games too unless they can win this game. If you go to William Hill they will give you 15/2 (8.5) on Empoli getting the three points from this match. If they did manage that, then their Serie A status is assured for next season.
A win for Empoli would be their fourth in a row as they have fought their way out of the relegation zone. They are a point ahead of Genoa who travel to 15th placed Fiorentina who are in dreadful form and three points clear of their opponents. Here’s where it gets confusing because if Empoli beat Fiorentina, they will finish above them in the league. Empoli would then need to beat Inter to stay up. If Genoa draw, then Empoli will only go down if they lose this match.
The problem Empoli has is that this is an away match. They have only won one league game all season. They had to wait until May 12 for that triumphant moment when winning at Sampdoria who have only won one of their last eight games. Just eight points have been earned on their league travels and half of those have come in their last three matches.
Inter are undefeated in their last six games against Empoli. They have only conceded against them in one of those matches. Inter are 6/4 (2.5) at Betfred to win this game to nil.
Inter are going to be missinig Stefan de Vrij and Sime Vrsaljko. Empoli will be without Luca Antonelli, Lorenzo Polvani and Antonio La Gumina.
Low Scoring Affair
Only one of the last 11 Inter home league games has seen over 2.5 goals scored in it. If you believe this will be a game where under 2.5 goals are scored, William Hill will give you 6/4 (2.5).
Inter would be devastated if they missed out on the Champions League. A point could be enough if Milan can’t win at SPAL and their form isn’t fantastic at present. Empoli will have one eye on how Genoa are getting on and are in good form at the moment with three wins in a row. Their away form is the worst in the league and they may have to rely on Genoa not winning to keep them in Serie A. A bet on Inter to win and under 2.5 goals scored has odds of 10/3 (4.33) at Betfred.
