As we reach the end of January, it’s interesting to look back at the odds that were available at the start of the season. When it comes to English League Two, there have been a few odds offered that haven’t quite worked out as planned.
The top three in the betting were MK Dons, Lincoln City and Mansfield Town. No problems there as that trio are currently all in the top six with Lincoln top, Mansfield second and MK Dons sixth. The fourth favourites to win League Two were Northampton Town and anyone who took odds of 9/1 are feeling rather foolish at present.
No Promotion Challenge
The Cobblers are currently 17th in the table, and only seven points above the relegation zone. 13 league draws haven’t helped their cause, but these supposed title challengers haven’t been higher than 14th all season. There’s little sign of improvement with their only win in the last nine games being a home win over Carlisle United.
Talking of Carlisle, they were ninth favourites at 14/1 to win the title. After a poor start that saw them as low as 16th, Carlisle are now fourth in the league and only eight points behind leaders Lincoln City after winning eight of their last nine fixtures.
Heading in the Wrong Direction
Now we come to the biggest disappointment of all. Notts County were eighth favourites to win the title at 14/1 but are bottom of the table and eight points from safety. Relegation to the National League is looking more than likely with only one win since mid-November.
The biggest surprise is Forest Green Rovers who were 40/1 at the start of the season and only three teams had higher odds. But in late January they are fifth in League Two and only nine points behind leaders Lincoln City. Most of the season has seen them in the top seven and that’s not what the bookies expected in August.
