Friday 14 June to Sunday 7 July
The 2019 Copa America tournament begins on Friday 14 June. This tournament sees the top South American nations and some invited guests will be battling it out. Will Chile be able to make it three wins in a row or will Brazil and Argentina justify early favouritism?
The 2019 Copa America tournament is being hosted by Brazil. That’s nearly the full house after staging the Confederations, World Cup and Summer Olympics since 2013. Ten South American countries and two invited guest nations – Japan and Qatar – will be taking part and are drawn into three groups of four. The top two from each group and the two best third-placed teams go into the knock-out stages.
Group A comprises the hosts Brazil, Bolivia, Venezuela and Peru. Brazil are the 6/5 (2.2) favourites with Betfred to win this tournament for the first time since 2007. They haven’t made it past the quarter-finals since that last victory. Brazil didn’t even make it out of their group in the last tournament three years ago. You can get 2/9 (1.22) at Sportingbet on them winning Group A.
They have played ten games since the 2018 World Cup, winning nine and drawing with Panama. Only two goals have been conceded in those matches. They have a strong line-up and Gabriel Jesus is 13/2 (7.5) at Bet365 to be the top scorer in this tournament.
Peru are the second-favourites in this group and are 8/1 (9.0) to win Group A. They will need to improve their form as they have only won three of their last ten games. That’s better than Bolivia who have gone seven matches without a win. They have only scored in one of their last six games and open the tournament against Brazil. Venezuela are 16/1 (17.0) at SkyBet to win this group and returned to form with a recent 3-0 win away to the USA.
Group A Team News
Brazil will be without Neymar who is injured and has been replaced by Willian. Peru are missing Paolo Hurtado and he’s been replaced by Josepmir Ballon. Rodrigo Ramallo has pulled out of the Bolivian squad and Venezuela are without Adalberto Penaranda.
This group sees Argentina face Colombia, Paraguay and Qatar. The Argentinian team hasn’t won the Copa America since 1993 and have been beaten in four of the last five finals.
This isn’t an easy group though and Argentina are 10/13 (1.78) to finish top of it. Four of their last five games have been won with the other being a 3-0 loss to Venezuela in March. All their top players are in their squad and Lionel Messi is 3/1 (4.0) at William Hill to be the tournament’s top scorer.
Colombia are second favourites in this group and are 9/5 (2.8) at Paddy Power. They have only lost one game out of eight since being knocked out of the 2018 World Cup by England. Their squad is dominated by the pair of Radmael Falcao and James Rodriquez who have 55 international goals between them.
Paraguay are 10/1 at Ladbrokes to win this group. They had gone seven games without a win until a recent victory over Guatemala. Qatar are one of the guest nations and you can get 50/1 (51.0) at 888sport to top Group B. They had won seven games in a row before losing to Brazil 2-0 and last year won away in Switzerland.
Group B Team News
Argentina have a full-strength squad for this tournament. Paraguay are without both Richard Ortiz and Roque Santa Cruz.
Chile come into this 2019 Copa America bidding to win the tournament for the third time in a row. They have beaten Argentina in the last two finals, both games ended goalless with Chile winning on penalties. After failing to qualify for the 2018 World Cup, they are 14/1 (15.0) at Betway to win this tournament. You can get 7/4 (2.75) on them winning Group B and they come into this tournament with only one loss in their last four games.
Uruguay are the 1/1 (2.0) favourites to win Group C. They last won the Copa America in 2011 and you can get 7/1 (8.0) at 888sport on them winning this tournament. Their last three games have all been won and by an aggregate score of 10-0 but against moderate opposition. Luis Suarez scored in their last game and he’s 8/1 (9.0) to be top scorer.
Also in this group are Ecuador, who have no wins in their last four games. There’s also the other guest nation, Japan who have only lost two of their last 16 internationals.
Group C Team News
The four countries have been able to name full strength squads.
Brazil will be strongly fancied in this tournament with them being hosts. The absence of Neymar is going to be a blow for them though. Argentina have made the last two finals and must be overdue a win. They look good at odds of 7/2 (4.5) at Betfair to finally give Lionel Messi his first Copa America winner’s medal.
