Cardiff City have lost three of their last four games in the Premier League but they did get a home win against West Ham in their last match. They are only two points from safety but face a side that need three points just as much as the home side does. Chelsea are battling to get a top four finish but have had some disappointing away results this year.
Cardiff City were heavily tipped to be relegated straight back to the Championship but are making a good fight for survival. They have eight games to go and are two points from safety but perhaps crucially they have a game in hand on their rivals. It’s 2/5 (1.4) at Betfair that they go down this season.
Their problem at the moment is that their next two league games are home to Chelsea and then a trip to the Emirates to take on Manchester City. They’ll be hoping that teams such as Southampton, Burnley, Brighton and Hove Albion and Crystal Palace don’t get too many points in their next couple of games.
Cardiff City had a terrible January with just one point from four league games. Two successive wins over Bournemouth and Southampton took them out of the relegation zone and gave them hope but then the next three were all lost. Not just that but they conceded ten goals in those defeats. Their home form has often rescued them this season (six home games have been won) and they boosted their survival hopes with a 2-0 home win over West Ham United.
Their home form against the top sides in the Premier League haven’t gone well though. They’ve met four of the top six so far (all bar Chelsea and Liverpool and that’s their next two home fixtures), losing all of them and conceding 16 goals. It’s 8/1 (9.0) at Bet365 that they get a home win over Chelsea.
The Londoners are sixth in the Premier League and three points behind fourth-placed Arsenal. With the Gunners not playing Newcastle United until Monday, they can go level with them with a win here but have an inferior goal difference. Chelsea trail fifth-placed Manchester United by a point and they host Watford so they can’t afford to come away from Wales without the three points. You can get odds of 2/1 (3.0) at SkyBet on a top-four finish for Chelsea.
After the 6-0 loss at Manchester City, Chelsea recovered with two league wins over Tottenham and Fulham. However, their inconsistent league form continued with a 1-1 home draw against Wolves and a 2-0 defeat at Everton.
It’s their away form that isn’t helping the London side. They have lost six away league games this season and four of the last five. Their only recent away victory was at relegation-threatened Fulham. That’s the only one of their last five away league games in which they have actually scored. You can get odds of 4/9 (1.44) at Unibet.
Chelsea have won their last four games against Cardiff City scoring 14 goals. Over 2.5 goals have been scored in the last six games between these two teams and the odds on that happening on Sunday are 4/5 (1.8) at BetVictor.
Cardiff will be missing Callum Paterson who was injured while on international duty with Scotland. Jazz Richards is also unavailable for selection. Chelsea have doubts over Ethan Ampadu and Ruben Loftus-Cheek.
Both Teams to Score?
The last six games played between Cardiff City and Chelsea have all seen both teams score. There are odds of 9/10 (1.9) at Paddy Power on both teams finding the back of the net.
Second Half Goal?
Six of the last eight Chelsea games have seen them score in the second half. At Betway it’s 3/8 (1.37) that Chelsea score in the second half of this game.
Both teams need the points and there are lots of questions to be asked. Can Chelsea overcome their worrying Premier League away form? Will Cardiff spring another surprise home win? Or will they again suffer a heavy loss at home to a top six side? A bet on Chelsea to win and over 1.5 goals looks a good bet here. It has odds of 7/10 (1.7) at Coral.
