When Sheffield United arrive at St Andrews on Wednesday they need to say thank you to the Birmingham team. Their 1-0 home win over Leeds United on Saturday meant that the 1-0 victory United had at Preston took them into the second automatic promotion place in the Championship.
It’s been a worrying few weeks for Birmingham City but they had a very welcome win at the weekend. Not long ago, Birmingham were on the fringes of the promotion play-off positions but then they went on a losing run. Any hope of promotion this season ended when they were deducted nine points for incurring too many financial losses over the past three seasons.
That point deduction and their continuing poor form all of a sudden put them in a relegation battle. They had lost five straight league games before beating Leeds United at the weekend. The win took them to 17th in the table but still only five points above the bottom three with six games to go. There are odds of 40/1 (41.0) at SkyBet on them being relegated this season.
Before the surprise win at the weekend, Birmingham had only earned one point from their last four home league games and only scored in one of them. Only two of their last nine home league games have been won and the odds on a victory over Sheffield United are 5/2 (3.5) at William Hill.
Sheffield United moved up to second place in the Championship thanks to their win at Preston North End and Leeds United losing. It was a 33rd minute goal from David McGoldrick that got them win at Deepdale to take them a point clear of Leeds and seven points behind leaders Norwich City.
The situation at the top is a constantly changing one as far as second and third places are concerned. Leeds United have their trip to Preston on Tuesday and a win will take them two points clear of Sheffield United.
If you go to Ladbrokes they’ll give you 2/5 (1.4) on United winning promotion this season. It’s 12/1 (13.0) at Black Type that the Yorkshire side can catch Norwich and win the title.
The Blades have only lost one of their last 12 league games and that was a last-gasp 3-2 loss at home to Bristol City. On their travels, United are on an unbeaten run of six league games with just one loss at Swansea City in the last 12. It’s 23/20 (2.15) at BetVictor that they win at Birmingham City on Wednesday.
Birmingham City have only lost one of their last eight games against Sheffield United with four straight home victories.. The reverse fixture between these two sides ended in a goalless draw. The odds on that happening in this fixture are 15/2 (8.5) at 888sport.
No major injuries reported.
Low Scoring Game Possible
The last four Sheffield United away league games have only seen three goals scored in them. All have had under 1.5 goals scored and it’s 11/5 (3.2) at Betfair that happens on Wednesday. The odds of under 2.5 goals are 4/6 (1.66) at Betfair and that has happened in seven of the last ten United away league matches and all but one of the last six Birmingham City games in the Championship and five out of six at home.
First Half Goals?
Four of the last five Sheffield United league games have produced a goal in the first half. It’s three out of four for the same stat re Birmingham City. There are odds of 11/5 (3.2) at Paddy Power on the first half being the highest scoring half of the game.
It’s asking a lot of Birmingham to beat both of the sides in second and third place in the table in the space of a few days. Sheffield United are in good form and a bet on them winning with under 2.5 goals in the game is 16/5 (4.2) at Betfred
