The latest addition to the Marvel Universe will be unleashed on movie goers in 2019 and has already earned a quote from bookmakers in the Best Picture Oscars betting market.

Avengers: Endgamestars Scarlett Johansson, Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans and Mark Ruffalo and is set to be released in April, making it one of the earliest of the big movies to see the light of day this year. It is the 22nd movie in the Marvel Universe, which began with Iron Man back in 2008, and is a direct sequel to Avengers: Infinity War (2018) while also being a continuation of Marvel’s The Avengers (2012) and Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015).

Fans of the super hero genre will be well-versed in the back story of this movie, which takes place after the events of Avengers: Infinity War which led to the destruction of half of all life in the universe. Downey Jr. reprises his role as Iron Man, while Evans is making what is likely to be his final appearance as Captain America, after agreeing to extend what was initially intended to be a six-movie stint in the role to seven. Johansson once again takes on the role of the Black Widow, while Paul Rudd, Chris Hemsworth, Jeremy Renner and Don Cheadle also return in their super hero guises.

Irish bookmaker Paddy Power has given the movie a 14/1 quote in the Best Picture market, but if it is to scoop the top prize, Avengers: Endgame will have to make history. Although super hero movies have played a major role in the history of cinema and have regularly won the Oscar for Best Achievement in Visual Effects, none has ever been nominated for the Best Picture Academy Award, even during the period since the list of nominees was increased from five to ten in 2009.

The movie also faces particularly stiff competition this year, as there are several leading contenders with Oscar-winning potential, including the 3/1 favourite The Irishman, directed by Martin Scorcese, Quentin Tarantino’s star-studded Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (6/1) and The Laundromat (4/1) which features three-time Oscar winner Meryl Streep.
