Algeria have won all four of their games in the 2019 African Cup of Nations. They are yet to concede a goal and bid to reach the semi-final when taking on Ivory Coast on Thursday.
Algeria last won the African Cup of Nations in 1990 and go into this quarter final against Ivory Coast as the 4/1 (5.0) second favourites to win this tournament. There are plenty of reasons for them to be confident about winning this year.
They have won all four of their games played so far in Egypt and that is the best record of any of the remaining countries. Only Morocco and Egypt won their three group games but both lost in the last sixteen. Algeria can be backed at odds of 6/5 (2.2) at Sportingbet to beat Ivory Coast in 90 minutes.
Not only have the Algerians won all of their games so far, they are also yet to concede a goal. The group stages saw them defeat Kenya 2-0, Senegal 1-0 (ending their long winning streak) and Tanzania 3-0,, despite making nine changes for that game.
Their group win took them into a last sixteen clash with Guinea. Algeria kept their winning run going with an easy 3-0 victory. The odds on them winning this game to nil are 9/4 (3.25) at SkyBet. The success of this team is not short-term hit, they are unbeaten in their last ten internationals. You can get odds of them qualifying for the semi-finals are 11/20 (1.55) at Betway. If they do get through, it’ll be their first semi-final appearance since 2010.
Ivory Coast won this tournament as recently as 2015. The odds on them winning another title are 7/1 (8.0) at Coral. They are at least making a better job of this tournament than the last. As defending champions they failed to even make it out of their group.
They failed to qualify for the World Cup last year but had a good deal of success in international friendlies. Ivory Coast went 11 games unbeaten before losing to Uganda last month. In the group stages, Ivory Coast beat South Africa (another of the quarter finalists in this tournament) and Namibia but lost to Morocco.
The last sixteen saw them up against Mali and they won that game 1-0. Wilfried Zaha scored the winner for them 14 minutes from time. The Crystal Palace striker is 7/2 (4.5) at Bet365 to score in this quarter final match. Mind you, a defeat will allow him to get home earlier to start transfer negotiations. The odds on that being delayed with a win in 90 minutes for Ivory Coast are 11/4 (3.75).
The last five games between these two countries have had over 2.5 goals scored in them. If you believe that stat will come up again, then BoyleSports will give you odds of 8/5 (2.6). Both teams have scored in those last five matches. There are odds of 6/5 (2.2) at Paddy Power on that happening in this match.
Ivory Coast won the last meeting winning 3-1 on their way to their 2015 African Cup of Nations triumph. That encounter was also a quarter final, so could history repeat itself? A 3-1 Ivory Coast win has odds of 50/1 (51.0) at Betfred.
Algeria are expected to recall Sofiane Feghouli with Adlene Guedioura and Ismael Bennacer likely to feature.
More from Mahrez?
Manchester City’s Riyad Mahrez has already scored twice in this tournament. He is 12/5 (3.4) at Royal Panda to score in this match.
Algeria are in top form coming into this game. No goals conceded in this tournament to date, four straight wins and a ten-game unbeaten run. They are the worthy favourites to win this game but this could well be a tight and hard fought encounter. The odds on an Algerian win with under 2.5 goals scored in the game are 11/4 (3.75) at Betway.
