The Oscars are the climax of Hollywood’s pomp and circumstance. For those tired of Hollywood’s pomp and circumstance (and yearly plague of bad movies) the Razzies are the ultimate annual revenge.
The Golden Raspberry Awards or “Razzies” were founded in 1981. 39 years later, they remain the best tribute to the worst films. While the Razzies have missed the mark a few times – Stanley Kubrick’s masterpiece The Shining received dubious honors in the committee’s maiden vote – in other years the coveted Worst Picture award has gone to a deserving piece of trash. Child-exploitative The Emoji Movie won the Razzie in 2018.
2019’s race to the bottom is a tight call between a pair of stinkers, reflected in Bovada’s betting odds for the Worst Picture category. Gotti is the slight favorite at 10/9 odds to win following a disastrous theatrical premiere. Critics have called the white-washed John Travolta vehicle the worst gangster movie of all time. But Holmes and Watson is close behind at 9/5 payout on the winner. The film was intended as a farce with Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly in the title roles, but earned a 10% rating on Rotten Tomatoes when audiences sat stone-faced through warmed-over jokes and meaningless plot lines.
Sleepers in the 2019 “Worst Picture” race include The Happytime Murders (9/2), Robin Hood (7/1) and Winchester (10/1).
Other notable Razzie nominations include Jamie Foxx as a strong (5/2) underdog for Worst Actor following his cringe-worthy performance in Robin Hood, and President Donald J. Trump for his starring roles in a pair of recent documentaries.
The 39th Golden Raspberry Awards will take place on February 23rd.
