Not every move works out and sometimes a dream move can turn into a nightmare. Danny Drinkwater is a perfect example of that scenario and this month is likely to see him leave Chelsea. But could he be on his way back to Leicester City?
From Title Winner to the Bench
Drinkwater was an influential member of the Foxes team that incredibly won the Premier League in the 2015-16 season. It was an achievement he never dreamed could happen, just like the rest of us who missed out on the massive odds available.
The midfielder had previously spent the first four years of his career at Manchester United. He made it to the bench once but never got on the field. He was sent out on loan to four teams before finally joining Leicester City in 2012 helping them to win the Championship and then the Premier League.
An England call-up came too and then in 2017, he was transferred to Chelsea for £35m. despite being on a contract to 2021 with Leicester. His time just hasn’t worked out and his career is at a standstill though he is being paid well.
Just One Game this Season
Injuries have hit him hard but even when fit, he’s been unable to secure a place in their first-team. Drinkwater has only played one game this season and surely, it’s time for him to leave Stamford Bridge and try to somehow resurrect his career.
There’s been talk of him moving to Fulham and teaming up again with Claudio Ranieri, but does he fancy a relegation battle? Leicester City have had an emotional season but still have a chance of Europa League football next season. Securing the return of one of their heroes would bolster their midfield and might even save manager Claude Puel from the sack. Drinkwater is 3/1 at SkyBet to return to his former club in the January transfer window.
